Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)
of Jefferson County Fact Sheet

Explanation of CASA

CASA is a private, non-profit organization which provides trained, court-appointed volunteers to serve as advocates for abused and neglected children involved in Family Court. CASA of Jefferson County is one of over 900 CASA programs nationwide, located in 50 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Authorization

The Kentucky General Assembly recognized the need for CASA through legislation; KRS 620.500-620.550. Since 1985 the Jefferson County judiciary has been using their authority to appoint CASA volunteers to children in need.

Structure

CASA is guided by a 32 member volunteer Board of Directors which oversees the activities of the organization. To review a complete listing of the Board of Directors, click here. CASA has a staff of seven which currently consists of an Executive Director, a Senior Coordinator, four Coordinators of Volunteers, and a Development Coordinator. The staff is responsible for program administration and volunteer coordination.

Non-Profit Status of CASA

This organization files an IRS Form 990 and is a 501(c)(3) public charity, which means that donations made to CASA are tax deductible as allowed by law.  This is important because each year CASA relies on the generosity of corporations, foundations, individuals, and special events in order to meet its budget. CASA is not a Metro United Way agency and receives little government funding. There are no fees for the services provided to children, which means the entire budget must be raised anew each year. • Donate in memory or in honor of a loved one

  • Ask if your company or your spouse's company has a matching gifts program to augment your contribution

  • Donate to Goodwill in the name of CASA and we will receive credit based on weight, where we will then be able to send CASA families in need of clothing or other household supplies
